What is Strength to Speed?

Strength to Speed is a specialist gym and training facility housed directly within Mapdec Cycle Works in Kendal. Built around a dedicated local community of cyclists, endurance athletes, and fitness enthusiasts, the gym focuses on functional strength, injury prevention, and athletic movement.

Unlike open-floor commercial gyms, every single class at Strength to Speed is fully coached. Experienced coaches work directly with you on form, mobility, and progressive overload so you can train safely and maximize your performance gains.

How Our Seasonal Training System Works

Endurance sports demand different physical attributes at different times of the year. The Strength to Speed methodology follows a progressive 8-month season (September 1 through April 30) designed to build peak fitness for the spring and summer outdoors:

1) Autumn: Foundation, Mobility & Heavy Strength

At the start of the season, the focus is on mastering movement mechanics and building raw foundational strength.

  • Focus: Perfecting technique, lifting heavy weights, improving hip and ankle mobility, and establishing core stability.
  • Goal: Building maximum force potential without adding unnecessary bulk.

2) Winter: Power, Velocity & Explosiveness

As the season progresses, strength is translated into athletic power and velocity.

  • Focus: Dynamic movement, kettlebell work, slam balls, and plyometrics.
  • Goal: Increasing raw wattage, leg turnover speed, and rate of force development.

3. Spring: Speed & Energy System Conditioning

Heading into peak event season, training shifts toward sustaining high power outputs.

  • Focus: Cardiovascular speed work, sled pushes, and conditioning circuits.
  • Goal: Building metabolic capacity to sustain strength and power over long distances.
