This is an excellent opportunity to learn cycle mechanics. Held in our lively Cycle Studio and the adjacent Lakes Cycles store, this City & Guilds qualification in bicycle maintenance is delivered by the Mapdec Cycle Works team and administered by Kendal College. It is a free course for successful completion by attending the 5 evening sessions. To enrol on this course please go to the course information page on the Kendal College website.
The course lasts 5 weeks. Monday evenings from 6pm to 9pm. There are 3 practical sessions where we work through gears, brakes and wheels. The other 3 demo/theory sessions cover bottom brackets, head sets, position set ups, compatibilities, safety checks, and lots of info to guide you through becoming more confident with your bike.
The next course starts on Monday 2nd October at 6pm.
The Road Bike course will follow these modules:
You love working on your own bike, we get that, we do too. It's even more fun when you have a workshop to hand with all the tools and little bits and pieces you need to get the job done. Plus, there is a friendly mechanic just next door who can keep you straight and maybe prevent any mistakes.
For an hour booking, which you can make with your membership you will have a workstand all to yourself, and a high quality selection of all the most common tools.
Any other tool you can borrow except for bleed kits and frame taps.
Use of the Rozone eco parts washer for an additional fee of just £10.
Consumable parts like inner cables, end caps, brake pads, etc can all be purchased on site meaning that you will be able to complete any task you set out to do.
For a full service or complete bike build you should probably allow 3-4 hours.
To build a bike from a box as supplied from an internet purchase you should allow about an hour.
If you would like us to conduct a full safety check of your work, we can run through a PDI (Pre Delivery Inspection) for an additional £10. Otherwise we cannot take any responsibility or liability for the safety or condition of your bicycle.
Please note, that due to the extra risks involved in servicing suspension, seatposts and hydraulic disc brakes we insist that this work is carried out by our own mechanics. We will quote a price for this type of work as required.
This course is all about building confidence in exploring further on your bike.
We go through pre ride safety and comfort checks along with regular service tips to give you peace of mind that your bike is ready for action.
After that, we run through a series of common road and trail side fixes that will get you riding again. We will help with tool and spares you may want to carry, and some tips to get you out of even the most catastrophic problems.
This will include things like:
The course will generally start at 9:30 am, at lunch time there will be some time to practice and fettle with the skills you learnt in the morning. In the afternoon we put the bikes on the turbo trainers and will run through adjustments you can make to your riding position to be more comfortable. We aim to wrap things up around 3pm
We will launch a series of dates for these soon, but for now please simply get in touch with some ideas of suitable dates. We need a minimum of 2 people to run this course, and a maximum of 4.View full product details
Trashed your rear mech, can't get into your low gears? This course will get you sorted, and give you all the skills to successfully keep your drive train running smooth and silent. This is also a great course to do if you want to convert to a modern 1x drivetrain. Just check in with us before the course to ensure we have the parts for you. As always we will price match any parts needed.
In this 3 hour course we will:
This is a Green level course, so no experience is required. To save time we like to focus on more modern drive trains so that we avoid legacy compatibility issues. 9 Speed (cogs at the rear) systems and above are ideal, and we can cover SRAM and Shimano systems.View full product details
Your wheels have more effect on your ride comfort, the handling and the drive train efficiency than any other individual part. Keep them smooth, true and tight and you will be rewarded with better handling, more confidence and a more enjoyable ride.
This course will cover:
Class size of no more than 4 people. This is a Red level course and would suit someone that already works on most parts of their bike. We supply all the tools required including wheel truing stands, spoke keys, cone spanners etc. We will only have time to go through one wheel, and it is best to use your rear wheel.View full product details
