'I can’t do yoga…I’m not flexible enough’ – are often the words we hear most from those new to yoga.
Yoga is a mind and body practice for everyone! It not only leads to greater flexibility, focus and body awareness, but also aerobic strength, so it’s really beneficial for cyclists. From power to endurance, athletes at all levels are incorporating yoga in their fitness regime to gain an edge over the competition and to prevent injury.
Yoga can help to relieve the physical niggles that come with cycling – from tight hamstrings, calves and thighs, to lower back discomfort and shoulder pain. It helps mobilise the joints and strengthen the surrounding muscles to keep them safe.
Another aspect of yoga is controlling your breathing, so you get more out of every breath. By breathing more efficiently you’ll improve your body’s ability to transport oxygen to your muscles. For many, yoga is also a form of meditation and can actually help you to relax your body and de-stress so you can get into the zone when you’re cycling!
Jacqui has been practicing yoga for over 15 years and considers herself to be a forever student. She qualified as a yoga instructor in India over a year ago and has been teaching part-time in Kendal since then.

Many cyclists’ main performance concern is optimising their power-to-weight ratio, increasing their VO2 max or developing explosive speed. However, what about an activity that develops core strength, stability and motion control? Pilates is a worthwhile addition to your training routine.
